Kylie Documentary available on Netflix

Pop is my Salvation

It is no wonder that I have been a fan since 2001. I remember how Kylie Minogue took over the radio waves. The songs were infections and underneath the polish and glamour was pure joy and gratitude.

Kylie, the self titled documentary on Netflix, explores what it means to be the pop-star from her own perspective. She has always been private and closely guarded. What fans have seen has been elegant expressions of bubbly joy. So far for us fans, there weren’t many factual surprises.

We knew exactly how it started and her dreams of becoming a pop-star, including her early interest in music. Dannii Minogue, her sister, introduced her to acting which caused her initial stardom in the soap Neighbors.

We even know about the relentless early criticism that she couldn’t sing or that she couldn’t be both an actress and singer. We remember the moment she was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2005 and how she disappeared only to return triumphantly on stage with joy. We also remember discussing her 2012 track Flower and speculating about her desire to have a child.

Kylie Documentary available on Netflix

What we didn’t know was how Kylie felt. This three part documentary does a wonderful job of exploring the struggles in her life, making it a great view for old and new fans. You’ll get the story of how it all happened, but for the first time we all get to step in a little closer. It is a journey of self discovery, love, stardom, heartbreak, and even death.

My favourite scene from the documentary is when Nick Cave talked Kylie into joining a 48 hour poetry contest in London. Kylie is reluctant, but does appear on stage and reads the lyrics from her first UK number one, I Should Be So Lucky. Kylie learns to love herself and the joy that her pop music gives.

Kylie closes the documentary talking about how pop has been her salvation. Through her struggles, music has carried her forward. I couldn’t help but think, it exactly why I have been fan. Pop is my salvation too!
