iOS 11 is the new Apple
In 2010 Steve Jobs famously remarked that the post-PC era had arrived. iOS 11, announced today and to be available for all 64 bit iPads and iPhones, brings us closest to that vision.
In strange twist, iOS becomes more like a PC with enhanced multitasking, a file browser, and even a Dock. The Dock first made its appearance in the now renamed OS X in 2001 as a revolutionary UI break thru for MacOS.
Apple publicly criticized Microsoft for its convergence with Windows 8. Microsoft, and to an extent Google with Android, has proved that even as consumers move away from relying on personal computers they still what powerful features that allow them to remain in control on their phones, tablets, and other devices. iOS is converging with MacOS not only with looks but with features.
This is a win for consumers and shows that Apple is listening. Apple has also improved Siri, Maps, HomeKit, Music, News and Camera features. New features include Pay Friends with Apple Pay and Do Not Disturb While Driving,
Things I’m excited about include NFC reader mode, iCloud family storage plans, screen recording, and password autofill for apps.
iOS 11 is currently in a developer beta and will be out for a public beta later this month. It is scheduled for release in the fall of 2017.
